We would like to invite you to the first, pilot edition of the new festival in Warsaw, which will take place on 10-15.12.2021:

International Movement Festival U:NEW – DANCE HIGHWAYS aims to popularize contemporary dance in its new forms and to strengthen the cooperation of Polish artists with European partners.

The idea behind the festival is to pay particular attention to themes related to ecology: green transformation, climate change and the future of our planet, as well as the urban fabric, human rights, cultural identity and tolerance.

The program of the first edition of the U:NEW Festival will include performances by artists from Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Norway and Spain, who work mainly in the area of new choreography and dance experimentation, where it is important to build an original concept through dialogue and the search for experimental movement and non-obvious interpretations. The programme will include a performance by the festival organisers, the HOTELOKO movement makers collective, “Axiom of Choice” by Agata Życzkowska and Mirek Woźniak, and a performance by the Theater der Klänge “Das Lackballett / Lacquer Ballet (Warsaw version)” from Düsseldorf, directed by J.U. Lensing and choreographed by the Greek artist Jacqueline Fischer, which was created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus as a continuation of Oskar Schlemmer’s ideas. The festival programme also includes a solo by the French artist of the young generation Léa Leclerc “Y’a des choses ou avoir envie de dire des choses”, a solo “Playlist” performed by Pedro Pauwels, an artist born in Belgium, who lives in France, a performance by the Italian ensemble ZAPPULLA DANZA movimento naturale “Apollo e Dafne” led by Giovanni Zappulla and Annachiara Trigili and a solo by the Norwegian artist THOMAS OF NORWAY “When Boys Cry”. We will also see three works from Spain from the Basque Country: a solo performed by Maria Ibarretxe “Choreographic Study About the End of Things”, a solo “Reset” realised by Igor Calonge Martinez and a performance “Urban Fallow” conceptualised by Natxo Montero.

An important element of the festival are the DANCE HIGHWAYS workshops and DANCE HIGHWAYS transnational meetings supported by the European Union within the framework of Erasmus +, which aim to exchange good practices between professionals in the field of contemporary dance and related arts and to raise the competence of dance artists through dance workshops of various techniques.

DANCE HIGHWAYS is a European project that brings together six contemporary dance partners the L’espace ASDC and Zappulla DMN Company in Palermo, the Theatre Developement Foundation ‘NEW WAVE’ and collective HOTELOKO movement makers in Warsaw, the THEATER DER KLÄNGE in Düsseldorf, Davvi – Centre for Performing Arts/Norway, La Fundicion in Bilbao and the Galerie Chorégraphique in Carcassonne. This international project will implement until September 2022 a European calendar of transnational mobilities, with the aim of sharing good practices between experts and offering ongoing professional training workshops for contemporary dancers. For the six partners of DANCE HIGHWAYS, it is a question of finding answers linked to the crisis caused by the pandemic both for the choreographic sector and for vulnerable populations, through the range of tools provided by contemporary dance practices. The transnational meeting will be hosted by the Theatre Development Foundation ‘NEW WAVE’ and HOTELOKO movement makers collective. Warsaw edition of the DANCE HIGHWAYS workshops will be led by the hosts Agata Życzkowska, Mirek Woźniak and Klara Szela.

Another important part of the festival programme is also the presentation of a performance made by young people, as part of the concept of developing a young dance audience. As part of this idea, a performance entitled “On the Way” will be presented by the jazz modern group New Folk, who work on a daily basis at the Youth Palace in Warsaw.

U:NEW Festival is the result of a wave of new approaches to the art of experimental dance and performance in Poland and Europe. U:NEW Festival is a flow of actions that touch upon our reality and identity. It is a collection of images that present this change. It is an attempt to understand the speed of developing technologies and to find one’s place in this new space. It is absurd, comical and authentic actions that unite individuals in search. These are sincere confessions and artistic demands. It is an interactive image of small and big cities. It is a dialogue and a voice in the discussion on the future of Europe.
